Baccarat Chemin de Fer
One of the main differences between the different variations of Baccarat is the position of the banker and who undertakes it. In the version of the game known as Chemin de Fer, the position of the banker passes clockwise from player to player each time the banker loses rather than being fixed by the individual casino. The house, however, provides the banker with funds throughout the game. A player may, if he or she wishes, pass up the opportunity to be the banker; in which case, it simply passes to the next person. The objective of each version of the game is the same: to reach 9. In Chemin de Fer, the banker deals four cards for each of the players and for himself; each participant now turns over the cards and adds the numbers on each together. A player having a total lower than five will usually draw another card, while a player with a hand greater than 5 will usually stand. If the player's total is five itself, the player will then usually also stand. The hands are then compared and the person who has the hand closest to 8 or 9 receives the pay-out.
Baccarat Banque (Deux Tableaux)
In the variation of Baccarat known as Banque or Deux Tableaux, the position of the banker is more permanent than in Chemin de Fer. The objective of Baccarat Banque is still to reach 9, but in this game, the position of the dealer is given to the player willing to wager the highest stake at the outset of the game. The banker then deals six cards to each player - three to each player on either side of him, twice over. The players than turn over their cards, add up the totals, and either draw cards or stand. In Baccarat Banque, the players may wager on other players' hands, but never on the hand of the dealer.
North American Baccarat - Punto Banco
Baccarat Punto Banco is the version of Baccarat most commonly played in North America; in this variation of the game, the casino itself banks at all times, and the banker is the person against whom the players make their individual wagers at all times throughout the game. In this game, each player is dealt two cards, which are, as in the previous two versions, turned over and totaled. Depending on the hand that the player has been dealt, he or she then takes a card or stands; if the player has a total of five or less, the player must draw; conversely, with a total of five or more, the player will stand. In Baccarat Punto Banco, the player may wager on either the player's hands or on the banker's hand. Most versions of Internet Baccarat are based on Baccarat Punto Banco.
