CASINO OF THE DAY

Baccarat only for the Rich and Famous

Many people are unfamiliar with the posh casino card game known as Baccarat. Perhaps that’s because this game is usually played amongst exclusive circles of wealthy and renowned gamblers. Many actors and celebrities play poker - from five card to Texas hold ‘em - but Baccarat tends to be the realm of a ritzy set of individuals whose names are only well-known amongst card sharks and aspiring players.

Tommy Renzoni

Take Tommy Renzoni, for example. This 1950’s casino executive started his career in Havana, Cuba, where he spent hours upon end watching customers play the Cuban version of Baccarat, Punto Banco. Sensing an opportunity, Renzoni took the game to Vegas, where he attempted to convince the owners of Sands Casino to open the first North American Baccarat pit. Luckily for Renzoni, the game was a success, and he became widely recognized amongst players as the father of American Baccarat.

Akio Kashiwagi

Another famous Baccarat player was Akio Kashiwagi. This big spender held the world record for Baccarat wins and losses. He first attained fame with his incredible Atlantic City win, of six million dollars in one evening. Kashiwagi achieved this record by betting as much as $200,000 per hand. Unfortunately for him, a few weeks later, his luck turned. This time, he walked away from the Baccarat table with a record loss of almost ten million dollars.

The Secret Agent: 007

Perhaps the only famous Baccarat player familiar to common folk is James Bond. Anyone who has read a Bond novel knows that Baccarat is this secret agent’s favorite casino game. In fact, Bond’s first appearance takes place at Casino Royale, a Monte Carlo casino where Bond loves to pass the hours sipping champagne and playing cards. Readers soon learn that Bond is one of Baccarat’s most skilled players, and that he plans to use his ability to nab a Soviet spy.

So, if it’s an exclusive game you’re looking for, Baccarat fits the bill. Famous Baccarat players manage to somehow keep their identities under cover. Perhaps that’s why so many casino players have yet to discover how much fun this game can be.
